FRED MAKOWECKI AND IMAGE CRAFTER SIGNS RECENT NAIT ALUMNI RECOGNITION

Please join us in congratulating Fred Makowecki (Commercial Signwriting ’74) on the 40th anniversary of his commercial sign shop, Image Crafter Signs. The shop specializes in large-scale digital printing, including vehicle wraps, signs and commercial billboards, magnetic signs, vehicle lettering, graphic and logo design, traffic signs, computer cut vinyl, and more.

Fred is a proud NAIT alumnus and shares that he remembers how close-knit the NAIT community was during the 1970s. He remembers walking to the cafeteria and hearing music from Bachman-Turner Overdrive – they had been brought in for a lunchtime concert. How neat is that?! In 2018, he attended NAIT’s Open House with his son, who later pursued his Auto Parts Technician apprenticeship. Being back on campus with his son is a memory he will never forget.

As he reflected on his 40-years in business, he shared a few lessons for entrepreneurs.

First, embrace technology. Don’t be afraid of the technological advances – instead, expand with them and make technology your friend. Second, remember that your people are what make your business successful. Take the time to truly understand what motivates your employees so that you can help them feel connected, engaged, and invested in the work. Finally, remember that there will be highs and lows during your entrepreneurial journey. When you first start your business, you’ll compare hour-to-hour and day-to-day, fearing that you’re doomed if you have a few days that aren’t busy. In time, you’ll start looking week-to-week, month-to-month, and eventually year-to-year, seeing the big picture of your business. As the saying goes, “when the going gets tough, just keep going.”

Fred is incredibly proud of the business he developed. He started Image Crafter Signs from his garage back in 1982 and has grown it to seven employees doing business all over Alberta. Fred, congratulations on this business milestone, and thank you for being a valued member of the NAIT Alumni community!
